Fromer Criminal Minds star Paget Brewster has been cast in the two-part 14th season premiere of NBC’s long-running legal drama, Law & Order: SVU.

Brewster will portray the Bureau Chief ADA in the Public Integrity Unit of the District Attorney’s office. Her character will be tasked with handling the case against Captain Cragen (Dann Florek), who is under suspicion of murder after waking up beside a dead women in the 13th season finale. Along with Brewster are guest stars from that episode; Peter Jacboson, Laura Benanti, Pippa Black, Ron Rifkin, Brooke Smith, and Dean Winters.

Brewster announced that she was leaving Criminal Minds (again) in February, wanting to move on to her next role, maybe in the comedy field. Brewster playing an ADA in SVU, she could possibly be called back to this show as a recurring ADA, SVU known for it’s “revolving door” of ADA characters/actors. She could possibly even be the series’ full time ADA, I know she’s saying the comedy field, but I feel she’d be a good addition to SVU.

Of course being an Assistant DA is nothing like an FBI profiler, but still, I’ve been hoping SVU would fully fill the slot missing since the first departure of ADA Casey Novak (Diane Neal) back in 2009. And Brewster is not new to SVU, she guest starred as the daughter of an elderly man in critical condition (he as suspect in murders back the 1960s & 70s) in the show’s 8th season.

It’s also awkward for Criminal Minds fans, both SVU and Minds premiere on the same night and at the same time, September 26th at 9:00PM ET/8:00PM (Central). Jeanne Tripplehorn replaces Brewster on Criminal Minds.

What do fans of both shows think, will you be watching Paget in the SVU premiere? Should Brewster fully join the SVU team as prosecutor? Hit that comments section!

  1. Paget Brewster joining the SVU cast isn’t a bad idea actually. I hoped she’d stay with Criminal Minds, even the show has it’s outrageous plotlines now, but she was ready to leave “Minds”. But for her to go to SVU, she would be going back on what she wanted, to join/star in a comedy. But then again, she’s not playing a cop/FBI Agent, she’s a lawyer in the DA’s office.

SVU in truth needs Brewster. Via Twitter, Diane Neal & Stephaine March aren’t coming back anytime soon, so why not fully cast Brewster?! Warren Leight and the other SVU producers/casting agents need to wake the hell up, I’ve been tired of watching the episodes drone on with the “confession scenes” anyway, they tend to be boring (which is why I stopped watching Criminal Intent on a regular basis after season 7).

Paget’s kind of the perfect fit for SVU, she’s not to old, not too young, just right. Dick Wolf and company are crazy if they let Paget go after the premiere.

  2. I stopped watching SVU because the writing got worse and worse after Tara Butters & Michele Fazekas left, and when show runner Neal Baer left with Chris Meloni, I decided to watch SVU again. It’s better, but it’s still not right, but it’s tolerable, Danny Pino’s character gives SVU that youthful feeling it had in it’s earlier seasons and Mariska’s doing better in the Benson role as series lead (who would have thought).

Paget Brewster is what SVU needs, the spunky Assistant District Attorney. I mean I’m not saying Stephanie March and/or Diane Neal aren’t good, but SVU does truly need new blood; especially if neither of those two ladies are going to permanently return to their roots. Paget was the only reason I really stayed with Criminal Minds, I stopped watching when she left, and I’m done with the show again. Criminal Minds has “jumped the shark” in the way SVU did after seasons 6 and 7.

Brewster might be on SVU for only two episodes, but I truly wish she was cast in the show as the permanent ADA, as you said, the “revolving door” needs to stop. I’m betting it cost SVU MORE to bring in big name guests to be ADA’s, versus having one on the cast in every episode. And Warren Leight and his writing team need to focus on writing court room scenes along with chatter between the police and ADA along with her and the defense team. The court aspects are what made SVU both interesting and successful. Guest stars spilling their guts on the witness stand.

If anyone has noticed or not, SVU has slowly stopped getting various award nominations, AFTER the legal aspects/court scenes were written out. Even MARISKA hasn’t been nominated for an Emmy this year. It’s time for a change on SVU, and somebody needs to hip Warren Leight and Dick Wolf to that. Fully casting Paget Brewster to the series would be a step in the right direction for SVU. It’s still enjoyable after 13 years, but this show’s original style (seasons 2-7 & 10) is what made this show as popular and enjoyable as it’s been.
